East Sandy Happenings – 3/7/25

Dear East Sandy Families,

We had a great week at East Sandy!  Our 5th graders participated in their “step-up” week. This is where the teachers created a schedule similar to middle school and prepared students for the transition up.  It was impressive to see how well our Mustangs adapted to the responsibility. Our goal at East Sandy is to help your child feel confident and capable to complete grade level tasks independently.  Many of our Mustangs are already there!

This week we followed our HOLD protocol. This is when there is a circumstance that requires students stay in their classes for a moment.  A HOLD is not an emergency or a danger to your child.
Potential reasons for this need include:
-Medical need
-Persistent distractions to the learning environment
-Safety for maintenance work
-Custodial clean-up
We practice all our procedures continuously throughout the year.

We are needing your help with student pick-up and drop-off. Our office is seeing an increase in students coming in late in the morning as well as being here later to be picked up.
As a reminder:
8:10am: The first bell rings
8:15am: Class starts
3:00pm: Dismissal
1:15pm: Friday Dismissal

Please do you best to have your child here on time so they can start the day with their peers and engage in instruction. We also ask that you pick your child up within 15min of dismissal.

Library Tip
The American Library Association has announced the Youth Media AwardsPeruse these lists to become acquainted with some of the best new books published last year

You may already be familiar with the Newbery and Caldecott Awards for best children’s book and best picture book respectively. There are other fantastic awards such as the Coretta Scott King and Pura Belpre that honor diverse creators. Check them out! I am particularly excited about Across So Many Seas by Ruth Behar because I love historical fiction and how this book captures pivotal moments in history that aren’t typically written about in children’s literature.

Digital Citizenship
A lot of news media content is designed to grab our attention and keep us engaged. Knowing that the news we consume can be biased or misreported, it’s crucial that all of us—especially young people—learn to decode the information we encounter.
